Fossil Fuels for fossil Brains (2): Gesellschaft, Moden und der SUV
Nachdem wir im 1. Teil dieser Serie gesehen haben, wie mangelhaft, verschwenderisch und klimafeindlich das Konzept der Fossil-Fahrzeuge ist, stellt sich doch die Frage, weshalb heute über eine Milliarde dieser Fahrzeuge auf den Straßen dieser Welt unterwegs sind. Sicher, Auto- und Mineralölindustrie haben viel dazu getan, dieses Konzept im eigenen Interesse zu verbreiten. Und es ist auch klar, dass sich viele Dinge mit dem Auto besser transportieren lassen als mit dem Pferdefuhrwerk. Dennoch lässt sich damit der Erfolg des Verbrenners nicht allein erklären. Bestimmend waren immer auch gesellschaftliche und modische Momente.
Gesellschaft
Über den Durchbruch des Verbrenners im 1. Weltkrieg, als dieser Typus die Bedürfnisse der Kriegsgesellschaft bediente, haben wir bereits geschrieben. Aber auch Karosserie und Fahrwerk waren gesellschaftlichen Tendenzen unterworfen. So saß in den frühen Fahrzeugen der Chauffeur meist außerhalb der Kabine und war Wind und Wetter ausgesetzt – wie andere abhängig Beschäftigte in der Landwirtschaft, im Straßenbau etc. Die durch mehrere Spiralfedern gedämpften Stahlreifen zwischen 1914 und 1918 waren Ausdruck des gesellschaftlichen Mangels an Gummi.
Die Fahrzeug-Karosserien wurden anfangs meist aus Holz, dann nach der Weltwirtschaftskrise 1929 meist aus Metall und schließlich im kriegszerstörten Europa aus naturfaserverstärkten Kunststoffen hergestellt – der ab Anfang der 1950er Jahre in Bremen hergestellte Lloyd („Wer den Tod nicht scheut, fährt Lloyd!“) und der Trabbi sind Beispiele dafür. Mitte der 1950er Jahre folgte im Zuge des Wirtschaftswunders im Westen die Ganzstahlkarosserie, in einigen Randsegmenten auch die Kunststoff-Karosserie (VW Buggy etc.). Heute gibt es unter dem Eindruck von Energiewende und Klimakrise eine Retro-Bewegung zu – modernen – naturfaserverstärkten Kunststoffen, im besten Falle sogar zu naturfaserverstärkten Bio-Kunststoffen [1].
Ein weiterer wichtiger Punkt war der Treibstoff-Verbrauch des Verbrenners: im 2. Weltkrieg war z.B. in Deutschland die Höchstgeschwindigkeit auf 40 km/h in der Stadt und 80 km/h außerorts limitiert, um Benzin zu sparen. In Zeiten des Wirtschaftswunders und des billigen Erdöls wurden in Deutschland nicht nur die Geschwindigkeitsbegrenzungen aufgehoben, auch das Spritsparen z.B. durch eine stromlinienförmige Karosserie spielte kaum noch eine Rolle. Das änderte sich zwar mit der Erdölkrise 1973, als geringer Verbrauch und eine dabei hilfreiche günstige Stromlinie zunehmend wichtig wurden. Es folgte jedoch ein Rebound-Effekt in den 1990er Jahren, nachdem schon Anfang der 1980er erste sparsame und starke Turbo-Diesel für PKW (Audi 100 Turbo-Diesel) auf den Markt gekommen waren: jetzt konnte man auch mit großen und schweren PKW (z.B. SUVs) richtig Gas geben, ohne dass es im Portemonnaie allzu weh tat. Die Stromlinie war vernachlässigbar, der Abweg zum „Clean Diesel“ (angeblich leistungsstark, verbrauchsarm, sauber) war beschritten. Heute kann sich unsere Gesellschaft den daraus resultierenden Spritverbrauch und die dabei erzeugten Klimagase nicht mehr leisten!
Moden
Nicht nur technische und gesellschaftliche Notwendigkeiten bestimmten stets das vorherrschende Konzept des Verbrenners, sondern immer auch die jeweiligen gesellschaftlichen und sozialen Moden. Unser grundlegendes Mobilitätsbedürfnis wird dabei überdeckt von anderen, häufig künstlich erzeugten und gesellschaftlich tradierten Bedürfnissen, Einstellungen etc. Hier einige Beispiele
Während die Konstrukteure bei vielen sportlichen Autos im ersten Drittel des 20. Jahrhunderts das Bootsheck verwenden, folgt danach die Formensprache aus dem Zeppelin- und Flugzeugbau – der Berlin-Rom-Wagen [2], aber auch die BMW-Isetta und der Messerschmidt-Kabinenroller sind hier Beispiele. Dann traten die an die Raketen- und Raumfahrt-Technik angelehnten Heckflossen, ab 1948 in den USA, rund 10 Jahre später vereinzelt auch in Deutschland mit dem Amphicar 770, dem Auto Union 1000 Sp und den Mercedes-Benz-Baureihen W 110-112, auf den Plan.
Zu einer repräsentativen Limousine der Oberklasse gehörten in den 1950er bis 1980er Jahren ein großer Kühler und ein Stufenheck. Schrägheck-Fahrzeuge waren in den 1960ern allenfalls was für Volkswagen mit seinem 1600 TL; ein Mercedes-Benz CLS Coupe´ oder CLA Shooting Brake wäre für den Stuttgarter Autokonzern damals undenkbar gewesen.
Wer mehr Wert auf Sportlichkeit als auf Repräsentation legte, für den führte bis in die 1990er Jahre kein Weg an einem „schnittigen“, d.h. stromlinienförmig optimierten Sportwagen vorbei. Erst in den 1990er Jahren trat ein neuer Mode-Typ auf den Plan, der Sportlichkeit verhieß, uns heute aber den Übergang zu einer klimaneutralen Mobilität sehr erschwert: die SUV-Mode (Sport Utility Vehicles), die 2018 bereits ein Viertel der Neuzulassungen in Deutschland für sich in Anspruch nimmt. Diese Fahrzeuge sind wegen ihres Gewichts, ihrer Größe (die auch Parkraum verbraucht), ihrer breiten Reifen (Rollwiderstand) und speziell ihres Luftwiderstands ein Problem, denn alle diese Faktoren führen zu unnötigem Treibstoff-Mehrverbrauch – SUVs sind Säufer! Doch während man über den ab 1977 gebauten Porsche 928 lästerte, man müsse ihn im Rückwärtsgang fahren, da der Luftwiderstand von hinten besser sei als von vorn, scheint die Strömungs(un)günstigkeit bei heutigen SUVs überhaupt kein Problem zu sein [3]. Dabei haben einige dieser Exemplare einen Luftwiderstand, für den sich selbst ein Kleiderschrank schämen würde! Warum also ist dieser Fahrzeugtyp heute so beliebt?
Neben dem hohen Einstieg, der solche Fahrzeuge in unser schnell alternden Gesellschaft vor allem für Senioren interessant macht, lässt sich das Phänomen nur psychologisch erklären: während man bis Ende der 1960er Jahre seinen sozialen Status allein dadurch demonstrieren konnte, dass man im Gegensatz zu vielen Mitbürgern ein Auto besaß, musste es im Zuge der Massenmotorisierung und des Straßenausbaus spätestens in den 1970er Jahren ein schnelles Auto sein – das GTI-Zeitalter war geboren. Doch mit der Massenmotorisierung nahmen auch die Staus zu, und im Stau sind nicht nur alle Autos gleich schnell, die Fahrer in flachen Sportwagen merken sogar zuletzt, wenn es wieder weiter geht. Der SUV hingegen hat nicht nur ein annähernd sportliches Image, sein Fahrer lebt nicht nur mit dem Gefühl höherer Sicherheit und Unverletzlichkeit (was sich bei einem Zusammenprall mit einem LKW ganz schnell relativiert), sondern mit seiner Größe und Breite demonstriert das Fahrzeug selbst im Stau den – angeblich – hohen sozialen Status seines Besitzers. Denn alle anderen sollen sehen: hier wartet ein ganz Wichtiger bzw. eine ganz Wichtige!
Bleibt die Frage, ob wir das Auto überhaupt heute noch brauchen, ob das Auto-Konzept neben anderen Individual-Verkehrsmitteln wie Fahrrad etc. eine Berechtigung hat. Zumindest hat das Auto einige technische Vorteile:
- Es bietet, anders als Zweiräder, hohe Transportkapazität sowie auch Standsicherheit bei Eis und Schnee.
- Es bietet einen fast vollständigen Witterungsschutz für Insassen und Gepäck – z.B. gegen Regen, Hagel, Wind (nicht aber gegen Kälte).
- Es bietet individuelle Mobilität und akzeptable Geschwindigkeit – auch in der Stadt und für Personen, die aus körperlichen Gründen zum entsprechenden Fahrradfahren nicht in der Lage sind.
Wem diese Vorteile wichtig sind, für den hat das Auto seine Berechtigung. Nur kann das Fahrzeug in Zeiten der Klimakrise künftig kein Verbrenner mehr sein; neue Antriebsformen müsse her. Welche das sein könnten – damit beschäftigen sich die weiteren Folgen dieser Serie.
