Fossil Fuels for fossil Brains (1): Der Verbrenner in seinem Zeitalter
Nein, es war nicht von vornherein ausgemacht, dass sich der Verbrennungsmotor beim Auto-Antrieb durchsetzen würde. Und dass er sich dabei so total durchsetzen würde, dass nach über 100 Jahren die Ideologie „Auto = Verbrennungsmotor“ fest in den Köpfen der meisten Autofahrer verankert ist. In der Frühzeit des Automobils, also um die Jahrhundertwende bis zum Ersten Weltkrieg, konkurrierten noch verschiedene Antriebskonzepte miteinander:
- das Elektromobil, das 1899 als erstes Landfahrzeug mit dem Belgier Camille Jenatzy über 100 km/h erreichte,
- der Dampfwagen, der mit Fred Marriot 1906 erstmals die 200-km/h-Marke durchbrach,
- und schließlich der Verbrennungs- bzw. Ottomotor, zuerst mit Gas, dann mit Benzin (Diesel spielte bei Fahrzeugen noch keine Rolle), womit schließlich der Blitzen-Benz am Vorabend des Ersten Weltkriegs seine Rekorde erzielte. Jedes dieser Technologie-Konzepte hatte seine besonderen Vor- und Nachteile [1]; so war z.B. die Stromlinie der Elektromobile und Dampfwagen meist überlegen, da diese auf die großen Kühler der Verbrennungsmotoren verzichten konnten.
Doch nach 1914 änderte sich die Situation; der Verbrennungsmotor wurde zum großen Kriegsgewinnler: Dampfwagen benötigen in den schnell wechselnden Kriegssituationen eine zu lange Vorheiz-Zeit, für Elektroautos fehlten im Felde – wo selbst einfache Funkstationen mühsam mit Kleingeneratoren und Standfahrrädern aufgeladen werden mussten – einfach die Stromleitungen für das Laden der Akkus. Verbrennungsmotoren hingegen ließen sich quasi nach dem Gulaschkanonen-Prinzip versorgen: ihr „Lebensmittel“ Benzin wurde in Fässern an die Front gekarrt. Der Krieg half nicht nur bei der Durchsetzung dieses Antriebssystems, er förderte es auch durch immer neue technische Innovationen: z.B. nach dem 1. Weltkrieg durch den in Jagdflugzeugen erprobten Kompressor, mit dem Mercedes 1924 bei der Targa Florio und Coppa Florio siegte, nach dem 2. Weltkrieg u.a. durch den Turbolader (Jagdflugzeuge) und das Automatik-Getriebe (Panzer), sowie vieles mehr. Natürlich gab es auch den umgekehrten Weg: die von Henry Ford perfektionierte Fließbandfertigung beim Model T wurde im 2. Weltkrieg für Panzer, Flugzeuge und sogar Schiffe eingesetzt.
Dass der Verbrennungsmotor keine Ideallösung ist, war Technikern schon längst klar: als Wärmekraftmaschine physikalisch begrenzt durch den Carnot-Wirkungsgrad, erreichen Automotoren in der Praxis auch im allerbesten Fall nur Wirkungsgrade kleiner 38% (Benziner) bzw. kleiner 45% (Diesel) – meist aber deutlich weniger [2]. Zudem ist die optimal drehende Kraft eines Motors (Drehmoment) immer abhängig vom Erreichen einer bestimmten, höheren Drehzahl (Umdrehungen/Minute), was z.B. zu Problemen im Ziehverhalten beim Anfahren führen kann. Daher tauchte schon früh als Kompromiss zwischen den Eigenschaften ein Antriebstyp auf, den wir auch heute zum Ende des Zeitalters der Fossil-Fahrzeuge wiederfinden: der Hybrid. Schon im 1. Weltkrieg konstruierte Porsche den Austro-Daimler C-Zug für schwere Geschütze, der aus einem benzingetriebenen 150-PS-Generatorwagen und E-Radnabenmotoren bestand; dieselelektrische Fahrzeuge (Busse) folgten in den USA der 1930er Jahre. Heute setzt besonders Toyota auf das Hybrid-Prinzip.
Ein Grund für den schlechten Wirkungsgrad der Verbrenner sind die großen Abwärmemengen, die er erzeugt. Früher wurde man den Temperaturen nur durch riesige Kühler Herr, und noch in den 1950er Jahren wurden Rennwagenfahrer bei höheren Außentemperaturen in ihren leistungsstarken Fahrzeugen regelrecht gesotten („Hitzeschlacht von Buenos Aires“ 1955). Kein Wunder also, dass bei den Fossil-Autos der Motor vorn dominierte, wobei große Kühler den Luftwiderstand erhöhten, und so zu mehr Treibstoffverbrauch und Abgasen führten. Der Heckmotor als Alternative verbesserte zwar grundsätzlich den Luftwiderstand (Stromlinie, s.o.), verkomplizierte aber die Kühlung und führte zu problematischem Kurvenverhalten. Der Mittelmotor, d.h. die Motorposition vor der Hinterachse, hat sich trotz guten Kurvenverhaltens nur bei den Renn- und Sportwagen durchgesetzt, bei denen sich die Fahrerkabine nicht über den gesamten Raum zwischen den Achsen erstreckte; andernfalls wäre auch hier die Kühlung kompliziert geworden.
Schlechte Motorwirkungsgrade führen zu hohen Treibstoffverbräuchen und erheblichen CO2-Emissionen. Da zwischen den Automarken Konkurrenz herrscht, und die meisten Käufer möglichst wenig Sprit verbrauchen sowie etwas für die Umwelt tun wollen, versprechen die Hersteller bei den relevanten Angaben „das Blaue aus dem Auspuff“ heraus. Damit die Verbrauchertäuschungen nicht allzu sehr ins Kraut schießen, wurde 1992 der Neue Europäische Fahrzyklus (NEFZ) als Vergleichsmaßstab für Verbrauchs- und Abgas-Messungen am Kraftfahrzeug eingeführt. Der NEFZ ließ den Herstellern genügend Schlupflöcher, die Werte ihrer Fahrzeuge um 10 bis 20% zu schönen. Doch wie der sich seit 2015 ausweitende Dieselskandal zeigt, reichte selbst ein löcheriger NEFZ nicht aus, damit die Hightech-Fahrzeuge wenigstens einigermaßen sauber dastehen konnten – ein „Offenbarungseid“ für die Verbrenner-Technologie, aber auch für das Bundesverkehrsministerium und das ihm untergeordnete Kraftfahrbundesamt. Denn der Dieselschwindel wurde nicht etwa im hiesigen Hightech-Autoland aufgedeckt, sondern in den USA. In der Verbrenner-Republik Deutschland war man nur im einem ganz weit vorn: im Abwiegeln.
Mittlerweile gibt es mit dem Worldwide harmonized Light vehicles Test Cycle (WLTC) ein neues, realistischeres Messverfahren. Doch auch das hat Schwächen: so arbeitet das Verfahren mit einer Starttemperatur von 25 °C, die aber in keinem Monat des Jahres als Durchschnittstemperatur z.B. in Deutschland erreicht wird. Temperaturen aber sind für Verbrenner wichtig, und können deren Verbrauchsangaben schnell zum „Wolkenkuckucksheim“ werden lassen. Denn ein kalter Motor verbraucht erheblich mehr Kraftstoff als ein Motor, der seine Betriebstemperatur erreicht hat; letzteres ist nach ca. 1,5 km, meist aber erst nach 3 km der Fall. Dazu schreibt das Umweltbundesamt: „Durchschnittlich verbraucht ein Mittelklassewagen direkt nach dem Start hochgerechnet 30 Liter auf 100 km.“ [3] Zu deutsch: Oberklassewagen und schwere SUVs liegen noch deutlich darüber. Und das schlimmste: einige dieser Fahrzeuge schaffen es im Alltag nicht einmal bis zum „betriebswarmen Motor“. Hier ein selbst beobachtetes Beispiel aus einem Hamburger Randbezirk, wo besonders Mütter mit großen SUVs unterwegs sind – und das geht häufig so:
1. morgens das Kind mit dem SUV in den Kindergarten gebracht – Strecke: 1,2 km.
2. zurück nach Hause zum Zeitunglesen/Aufräumen etc. – Strecke: 1,2 km.
3. mit dem SUV zum Einkaufen und zurück – Strecke: 2 km.
4. mit dem SUV zu Freundin; gemeinsam joggen etc. – Strecke: 1,1 km.
5. zurück nach Hause, Mittagessen vorbereiten – Strecke: 1,1 km.
6. Kind mit dem SUV aus dem Kindergarten abholen und zurück: 2,4 km.
Insgesamt macht das 9 km pro Tag, 45 km pro Woche, und rund 200 km im Monat – immer mit kaltem Motor. Geht man dabei von einem nicht zu hoch angesetzten Verbrauch von 35 l/100 km aus, so werden auf diesen Kurzstrecken von nur einem einzigen SUV 70 Liter Treibstoff im Monat verpulvert sowie die entsprechenden Treibhausgase freigesetzt. Und dies ist wahrlich kein Einzelfall – aber es geht noch absurder: die häufig beim Abgas noch dreckigeren Oldtimer [4] brauchen nicht einmal eine grüne Umweltplakette und dürfen trotzdem in Umweltzonen einfahren!
Andere Autofahrer wiegen sich in dem wohligen Gefühl, sie würden etwas für das Klima tun, weil sie mit Autogas (LPG) oder Erdgas (LNG) unterwegs sind. Doch wegen der Emissionen der Vorketten (Energie für Förderung und Transport, sowie Gasverluste/Schlupf) sind diese gasförmigen Treibstoffe nicht klimafreundlicher als die flüssigen. Es ist nur eine weitere Illusion, mit dem die Freunde des Verbrenners die Menschen beschwichtigen wollen.
Wer all‘ dies sieht und weiß, muss schon geistig „fossil“ sein, um das Verbrenner-Auto heute noch für ein zukunftsfähiges Mobilitätskonzept zu halten. Der Verbrenner hat seine Zeit gehabt. Sie ist vorbei!
