IBC: Vom Batterievertrieb zur Solargröße
Ein Unternehmensporträt von Heinz Wraneschitz
Offenbar ist IBC-Gründer Udo Möhrstedt (82) beileibe noch nicht zufrieden. „Ich habe immer gedacht, dass es schneller geht mit der Energiewende. Aber die wurde leider immer wieder behindert.“ Dabei verliefen für ihn die vergangenen 40 Jahre fast so etwas wie im Märchen.
Es war einmal ein junger Diplom-Physiker, der hatte bei einem Batteriekonzern aus Niedersachsen viel Erfahrung mit der Entwicklung von Golfwagen-Akkus gesammelt. Doch dann lernte er die Tochter eines Starterbatterie-Herstellers in Franken kennen und lieben. Und so übersiedelte er nach Bad Staffelstein und gründete die Firma International Battery Consulting, kurz IBC. Das war im Jahre 1982. Jedoch kam kurz darauf vor das Consulting noch „and Solar Power“, wurde aus dem als Batterievertrieb angedachten Unternehmen IBC Solar.
Denn Udo Möhrstedt, der nämlich war jener Physiker, hatte vorhergesehen, welch großes Potenzial die damals noch in Kinderschuhen steckende Photovoltaik für die Stromversorgung der Erde bekommen würde. Mit der japanischen Firma Kyocera, die damals gerade im deutschen Solarmarkt Fuß fassen wollte, fand er einen starken Partner: IBC Solar übernahm 1983 deren Europavertrieb. Und das mit ziemlich großem Erfolg.
Aber der hat bekanntlich Neider. Und Kyocera nahm seine europäischen Solargeschäfte in die eigenen (Vertriebs-)Hände. Weshalb sich Möhrstedt 1993 nach einem neuen Partner umsehen musste. Den fand er in der US-Firma Solarex. Mit der kreierte er gemeinsam ein Solarmodul, das auf die Erzeugung möglichst vieler Kilowattstunden pro Jahr (kWh/a) optimiert war. 1999 kam es gar zum eigenen Marken-Label „IBC-Solar“. Um unabhängiger von externen Qualitätsbewertungen der eingesetzten Technik zu werden, entstanden mit der Zeit Freilandtestanlage und Testlabor am Firmenstandort Bad Staffelstein Oberfranken.
Bei der „insgesamt abgesetzten PV-Leistung wurde 2021 die Fünf-Gigawatt-Marke geknackt“ – knapp ein Prozent aller weltweit installierten Solarmodule. Damit können „über drei Millionen Menschen weltweit mit Sonnenstrom versorgt werden“, hat das Unternehmen errechnet. Eine Photovoltaik-Erfolgsgeschichte, die sich bis heute fortsetzt: Auf der kürzlich in München stattgefundenen Solarmesse Intersolar – offiziell „The Smarter E“ – feierte Udo Möhrstedts IBC Solar AG unter einem großen, recyclebaren Messestand groß den 40. Unternehmensgeburtstag.
„Hab noch viele Ideen“
Doch das Jubiläum ist für Möhrstedt kein Grund, sich auszuruhen: „Ich hab noch viele gute Ideen. Warum sollte ich müde sein?“, erklärt er auf unsere Frage, ob er sich nicht aufs Altenteil zurückziehen wolle. Im Gegenteil. Der Vorstandsvorsitzende der Firma, seit dem Jahre 2000 eine nicht börsenorientiert geführte Aktiengesellschaft, will beweisen: IBC soll weiterhin wie in den letzten 40 Jahren „Pioneering Sustainability“ betreiben, also ganz vorne bei der Schaffung nachhaltiger Energie dabei sein. So stand es über dem Münchner Messestand. Und auch auf der Webseite wird versprochen: „Nachhaltigkeit ist für uns mehr als ein Modewort. Dafür stehen wir jeden Tag mit unserer Arbeit, mit unserer Vision, unserer Mission und unseren Werten.“
Nachhaltig wirkt auch die Firma selbst: Wenn man sich die hiesige Solarbranche über diesen Zeitraum anschaut, dann ist von den Pionieren aus den 1980er Jahren kaum noch einer übrig. Die damals einzigen deutschen Solarmodul-Hersteller AEG/DASA oder Siemens/Interatom: schon lange nicht mehr da. Vertriebsfirmen oder Systemanbieter kamen und gingen. IBC Solar aber blieb. Vielleicht auch, weil das Unternehmen nachhaltig, also langsam wuchs – aber kontinuierlich.
Nur einmal gab es einen Einbruch: „2014 standen mir die Tränen in den Augen, weil ich 85 Leute entlassen musste“, erinnert sich Möhrstedt. 2014: das war jenes Jahr, als die erste „GroKo“ die Regierung übernommen hatte und mit einer neuen Version des Erneuerbare-Energien-Gesetzes EEG den zwischenzeitlichen Einbruch am deutschen Solarmarkt maßgeblich provozierte. Bei IBC brach damals der Umsatz von 300 Mio. Euro (2013) auf 168 Mio. Euro zusammen.
Doch IBC bewies damals die Qualität eines Stehaufmännchens. Ende des vergangenen Jahrzehnts war denn auch die 300-Mio-Euro-Umsatzschwelle bereits wieder dauerhaft überschritten. „Einen erfolgreichen Mittelständler, der die deutsche Solarbranche maßgeblich geprägt hat“, nennt ein Branchenkenner das Unternehmen um Udo Möhrstedt. Seine Ehefrau muss an dieser Stelle genannt werden: Gertrud Moll-Möhrstedt fungiert seit langer Zeit als Aufsichtsratsvorsitzende und prägt die Firma maßgeblich mit.
IBC ist inzwischen sehr international aufgestellt, hat Tochtergesellschaften in Europa, Afrika und Asien. Doch den größten Teil des Geschäfts macht weiterhin der heimische Markt aus: In den letzten veröffentlichten Bilanzen 2019 und 2020 stehen jeweils etwa 80 Prozent an Umsatz und PV-Absatz unter „Handel und Projektgeschäft Deutschland“.
Dennoch: Egal, wo auf der Welt, das Unternehmen sieht „eine rasante Dynamik im Solarmarkt“ voraus und habe sich „für diese anstehenden Herausforderungen gerüstet“. Die Marktentwicklung erwartet man in drei „relevanten Bereichen: Eigenheim, Gewerbe/Industrie sowie Solarparks“. Für jedes gibt es nun ein eigenes Geschäftsfeld im Konzern. Dafür wurde das nagelneue Motto „Have Sun“ entwickelt – in der Kommunikation spricht man von „Claim“.
„Have Sun“ gilt aber eigentlich schon seit den Anfangstagen von IBC Solar. Denn ob netzautarke Solaranlage, private oder gewerblicher PV-Anlage auf Garage, Carport oder Dach bis zum großen Solarpark: IBC ist seit jeher – mit Partnern natürlich – „globaler Anbieter von Energielösungen die Zukunft der Energieversorgung“.
Unternehmer Möhrstedt hat im Übrigen maßgeblich mitgeholfen, das „Symposium Photovoltaische Solarenergie“ ins Leben zu rufen. Seit 1986 trafen sich im Kloster Banz nahe dem Firmensitz jährlich Hunderte deutschsprachige Fachleute der Branche. Nur in diesem Jahr musste es nach Freiburg ausgelagert werden. Sicher ist das PV-Symposium auch ein Grund, warum Udo Möhrstedt 2012 das Bundesverdienstkreuz erhalten hat: „Für seine Pionierleistung in der deutschen PV-Branche“, wie es heißt. Und ein Solarpionier will er auch bleiben.
